Strengthening Sustainability: Bycatch Survey Supports Bahamas Lobster Fishery

This past month, Tropic Seafood facilitated a bycatch survey aboard a Bahamian lobster trapping vessel. Led by The Bahamas Department of Marine Resources, an observer joined the vessel to gain insight into the lobster trap fishery, with a focus on the bycatch of other species within the traditional wooden traps.

This work supports the ongoing Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification of the Bahamian Spiny Lobster Fishery. The Bahamian Spiny Lobster fishery is the only MSC certified-sustainable fishery in the region. This certification plays a critical role in ensuring sustainable stocks into the future, safeguarding the livelihoods of all in the fishing industry.

To meet the demands of the MSC certification, Tropic Seafood works closely with the Bahamas Department of Marine Resources (DMR), The Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF), the Bahamas Marine Exporters Association (BMEA), and various other NGOs and scientific bodies. Initiatives like this reflect a continued commitment to responsible fisheries management in The Bahamas.
